Szentgotthárd is situated along the Hungarian-Austrian-Slovenian state border, at the confluence of River Rába and Lapincs. It is a settlement combining these three nations’ culture, traditions and inhabitants. Currently, Szentgotthárd is the centre of the Slovenian minority in Hungary, therefore Slovenia operates a consulate in the town. The town is marked off by the Őrség National Park in the south. For decades, the Iron Curtain blocked it from visitors, but isolation has helped to preserve unspoilt the beauties of nature. The valley of River Rába, Lake Hársas, the „Vendvidék”, the forests of the Region Őrség, the characteristic scattered settlements, can be seen only here, attract more and more visitors to the town and its surroundings.
